September 15, 2025 Auroras

Aitkin County, Minnesota

I was on my way back from a mountain bike race and visiting family in the Twin Cities. Solar wind conditions were excellent for auroras, so I began looking for them as I drove northward. By the time I got north of Aitkin on Highway 169, it was dark enough to see auroras. I stopped briefly to take some pictures as they already appeared to be pretty high in the sky, and I don't like to miss substorms. I intended to find a better shooting spot once I got home, but soon after I took these shots, I quickly ran into overcast conditions. Looks like some of the low, Lake Superior sea breeze style clouds snuck in before I noticed them on satellite.

I pulled over at a county road off Highway 169 and took this shot. Some of the auroras were overhead.

I ran across 169 to get a different view directly north. You can see the clouds moving in.
