March 31, 2017 Auroras
Grand Rapids, MN
For the fifth day in a row, a high speed stream of solar wind buffeted Earth's magnetosphere. This evening, the auroras were brighter than typically is the case this late into the high speed stream. I decided to bike down to the Forest History Center again, where I photographed the auroras for several hours.
The initial substorm immediately after I arrived. I was trying to frame the tree in it. |
I re-pointed the camera, but I'm not getting enough of the water reflection here. |
Now, I'm framed pretty nicely on the dock and trees, but my camera bag is there. |
I took away the camera bag and got this shot. |
Back to landscape mode. |
The auroras dimmed, but a faint band of aurora "sprites" materialized. |
A third substorm for the evening. This one was actually much brigher than the others, but my shutter speed was faster. |
Aurora "tornado" on the left. |
