February 8, 2014 Auroras
Tower, MN
I went up to Lake Vermillion to chase auroras after a high speed stream coming from a coronal hole in the sun. The high speed streams are usually pretty reliable, and this one produced some low Bz and increasing wind speeds during the right part of the day for us. Although the moon was out, the sky was clear, affording us a full view of the auroral oval. Characteristic of this winter, however, the temperature was in the -20s Fahrenheit. Only on February 19 have I shot in warmer conditions in Minnesota this winter.

The auroral oval starts to show some structure at the beginning of a mild substorm. |

All snowmobile trails lead to the auroras. |
