September 1, 2016 Auroras
Itasca County, MN
A corotating interaction region had started to affect Earth's magnetosphere during the day, and auroras were a good bet during the evening. Bz was south from 5 to 10 nT, and solar wind speeds were increasing. Because of the new moon, I decided to head north of town to get away from the city lights. I chose Pughole Lake as my shooting location, as I've done several times in the past, and then moved later to Johnson Lake.

Looking to the northeast from the Pughole Lake landing, the auroral arc begins to intensify. |
It's getting quite bright now. |
A very bright substorm emerges, and the auroras begin to dance around very quickly. |
The structures are moving very quickly here. |
Things maybe fade a little bit, but they are still pretty bright. |
