March 9, 2025 Auroras

Itasca County, Minnesota

The lights came out due to southward Bz, and I went out to shoot them. I started at McKinney Lake in Grand Rapids because the lights were bright, and I thought a substorm would occur very soon. After shooting there for a bit, I moved up to Wabana Lake and enjoyed some time with the ice fishing folks, who were enjoying their fishing, maybe oblivious to (or not caring about) the northern lights.

After a while, I grew tired of the sound of the gas-fired generators they used for whatever purpose they needed electricity, and I left to go someplace more quiet. This time, I needed to hike about a half mile down a trail at Joyce Estate, and I walked out onto Moore Lake. By this time, some clouds were moving in, but there weren't enough to fully cover the auroras, and I was able to enjoy another small substorm there.
