Lake Winnibigoshish
Out to Lake Winnie I went. This is the first decent chance to photograph auroras with my new Canon mirrorless camera. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that the lens resets itself when you shut off the power. I needed to change the battery, and this change requires shutting off the power. I didn't notice my shots were out of focus until I had shot a complete substorm timelapse sequence. There would have been some keepers in there!
On the more fun and positive side, I spent some time talking to the owners of the Big Fish restaurant in Bena. It was interesting meeting them. They had recently moved up here from southern Minnesota and had not seen the auroras much. There wasn't much to see when they first came, and they were about to turn right around and leave, but I advised them to be patient and that the auroras would eventually brighten up. They did after about 20 minutes. They enjoyed the substorm and then left. I focused my camera and took a few shaper images before I returned home.

A look at the oval when I first arrived. |

An early, small substorm. The battery was still good, and the camera was in focus here. |
|
The second substorm begins, but I had changed the battery at this point and didn't realize I needed to refocus after turning off the camera. |

The Big Fish restaurant owners enjoyed this show. |

Here's the brighest part. |

The auroras faded, but I got this sharp image before I went home. |
