October 21, 2023 Auroras
Lake Winnie
The solar wind became favorable for auroras. Bz dropped south, but the wind speed was not very fast. Clouds covered the sky in Grand Rapids, so I had to drive west to find clear skies. I figured the back end of the clouds would pass Lake Winnie by the time I got that far, so I set Winnie as my target destination for shooting auroras.
When I arrived, the auroral oval was present, and I set up on the dock. One camera took a slow time lapse, and I used the other to point where I wanted to compose shots.
Auroral oval around 11:42 PM CDT. |
The oval begins to show more structure and appears as more of a double arc at 12:30. |
A substorm slowly developed by 12:43 AM. |
12:51 PM looking due north. |
Bright to the northwest. |
Also bright to the northeast. |
Looking northeast with the 24mm lens when the auroras were brightest (around 1:00 AM). |
