April 24, 2023 Severe Geomagnetic Storm
Itasca and Koochiching Counties, Minnesota
Best display I've probably ever seen. I'll update this some more as I process images.
This is the start of the big substorm that happend just after 11:00 PM. |
The auroras expanded and brightened very quickly. |
At Bigfork, looking north. |
I set up a camera with a fisheye lens looking southeast. |
The band of auroras was just barely far enough north that I could get a little bit of a corona. |
A couple cars came by on the road, so I moved the camera out of the way. |
Southern Koochiching County (north of Craigville) at 12:11 AM. Taken with my iPhone. |
I moved to a location north of Effie in southern Koochiching County. |
I continued to shoot at this location for about three hours: 11:46 to 2:38 AM. |
24 mm shot. |
An aurora "mesocyclone". Rotation is opposite what it would be in a thunderstorm. |
Some sort of aurora beast or extraterrestrial. |
A sharp band of auroras intersecting with the horizon. |
Many interesting shapes to the northwest. |
I took an 8mm, full sky, fisheye picture before I left. |
Back at the continential divide on Highway 38. |
Pughole Lake at 4:36 AM. Contrast is becoming subdued as twilight brightens |
Back home at 5:02 AM. |
