February 10, 2023 Auroras
Itasca County
Solar wind conditions were still favorable (but not great) for auroras, so I went out to shoot for a bit. I had about an hour before the moon rose, so I decided to take advantage of the darkness that might allow the auroras to be seen. I drove up to Wabana Lake and walked out onto the lake to find an auroral arc to the north, a few degrees above the horizon. The solar wind looked very steady, so I did not expect to see a substorm, where the auroras brighten and move around quickly. Indeed, there was none. The oval faded as Bz approached neutral, and the moon came up, washing things out. I did a timelapse, and I stayed out long enough to capture a long-duration meteor that pass through the upper part of my frame just after the moon rose.

A meteor streaks across the top of the frame as the auroras dim, and the moon rises. |
