September 27, 2022 Auroras
Grand Rapids, MN
This event was a bit of a surprise. Bz went south to a low of -13nT in the early evening (before sunset). Despite Bz doing it's typical northward flip at sunset, I was able to get out before the auroras dissipated. I saw a band of green from my driveway (somewhat rare now because my north view has become more obscured by trees over the years), took a cell phone picture, then headed out north of town for a better view.
The green band moved quickly overhead, and I set up as quickly as I could while various patches of aurora were in the northern half of the sky. I snapped pictures for about 15 minutes, and I checked my phone to verify that Bz always seems to stay north after sunset. As I type this, Bz has gone to 22nT. It would be an amazing show if it were -22nT. Maybe right after I go to bed...

Blobs of red, green, and ??. The more typical auroral columns are on the northern horizon to the left. |

Sunset in Minnesota is about exactly when Bz crosses north at around 0030 UTC. |
