September 5, 2022 Auroras

Grand Rapids, Minnesota

The third night in a row with nice auroras! Bz was still south, but not by a whole lot. The solar wind speeds hovered around 650 km/s. I was back home and left as soon as it got dark. I could easily see an arc of auroras to the north as I drove out of town, so I knew it could be a decent show. Nevertheless, I was a bit surprised by how high in the sky these auroras developed. We also were treated to an appearance of STEVE (strong thermal emission velocity enhancement). Here are two of the best pictures I took.

Multiply-colored auroras erupt in a substorm.

STEVE appears! The band was a bit asymmetric, ending in the northwestern sky and the eastern sky.
