August 30, 2022 Auroras
Cohasset, Minnesota
A highs speed stream of solar wind, or combination of that and some recent CME arrivals, brought northern lights to the skies of northern Minnesota. This whole week was forecast to be pretty clear, so the time was right to get out and see auroras on a lot of evenings. This was the first of the week.
The phenomenon called STEVE (not strictly a precipitating electron type of aurora, but rather, strong heating of the ionosphere during aurora events) developed. There were also some meteors.

The display was somewhat colorful right away. |
|
STEVE and the picket fence auroras began. A small meteor is in this shot, too. |
|
STEVE gets really intense to the west. |
|
STEVE fades a bit, but hints of the picket fence remain. |
