July 4, 2022 Auroras
Glendive, Montana
I was actually on storm chase tour this week, but I decided that since the solar wind conditions looked good, I would make an attempt to photograph auroras in Montana, where we were staying for the night. After dinner at the nearby diner, I walked to the north of the hotels area where it was a bit darker. I had to keep walking north, and the ground was pretty wet from the evening's thunderstorms. Also, the clouds hadn't cleared yet, so I basically had to wait until the back edge of the thunderstorm anvil got far enough east so that I could peek underneath it. That's exactly what I did. This shot was 68mm, which is pretty zoomed in for an aurora picture.
