February 24, 2022 Auroras
Itasca County
Some fast solar winds and a slightly southward-pointing magnetic field in the solar wind brought auroras to northern Minnesota this evening. After cross-country skiing in some pretty cold conditions (-10 deg F), I decided to check for auroras. I stopped by Prairie Lake and found them to be pretty dim initially, but they brightened up, and some structure appeared. After a few minutes of this, I decided it would be worthwhile to head north to Wabana Lake and shoot from there, as the show appeared destined to be persistent.
I got to Wabana Lake, and as expected, the show was continuing. I stayed there for an hour and kept shooting occasionally. The show settled back to its double-banded auroral arc state with no apparent transition to a more active state. I needed some sleep, so I headed home.
