April 17, 2021 Auroras
Chippewa National Forest
A high speed stream of solar wind plus slightly southward magnetic field (-6 or -7 nT) brought visible auroras during the night. I headed out just after 9:00 PM, and I had to drive away from some clouds to reach my shooting location around 10:00 PM. The auroras were visible as soon as I got there, but the moon was also out a bit (not bright enough to interfere much, however).
I shot until about 1:15 AM before I headed home.
This was the scene most of the time over North Star Lake. |
The moon is getting close to setting, just after midnight. |
Just as the moon sets, a small substorm begins under the clouds. |
Looking a little more back to the north, the auroras continue behind the clouds. |
This is looking east-northeast over Caribou Lake around 1:15 AM. |
