July 25, 2020 Auroras
Pughole Lake (Chippewa National Forest)
Looks like some sort of weak CME interacted with Earth's magnetic field, getting the auroras going in the evening. After spending most of the evening on Deer Lake, I drove over to Pughole Lake because it wasn't too far away (I actually had tried the boat landing on the south side of Deer Lake, but there were quite a few clouds, and the auroras were too close to the northern horizon to be visible from that boat landing).
My timing over the past couple events has been pretty lucky. I arrive at the shooting location with an auroral arc visible and don't have to wait too long until a substorm (brightening and "dancing" of the auroras) begins. Looks like Solar Cycle 25 is ramping up.
A mild substorm in progress near midnight. |
