August 5, 2019 Auroras
Itasca and Koochiching Counties, Minnesota
A high speed stream of solar wind hit earth beginning this evening, and the corotating interaction region ahead of the stream had some pretty hefty magnetic fields with it. The result was a nice aurora display that took a while to develop, but once it did, it was nice and high in the sky.

The Milky Way was bright under the temprorarily clear skies. |
The Bigfork River southeast of Big Falls. |
The auroras are beginning to brighten on the Bigfork, but clouds are moving in. |
Going back south on Highway 6, I stopped to take this picture. |
A substorm of auroras shines over North Star Lake. |
A minute later, the shapes are a little different. |
The view looking west toward a thunderstorm. The storm was obscured by clouds, but I could see distant flashes. |
