February 1, 2019 Auroras
Chippewa National Forest
A high speed stream of solar wind was blowing past Earth. I had hoped for some auroras during the evening, but clouds had moved in for the night. Still, I kept a close eye on satellite and saw a small clearing headed for north-central Minnesota. I drove north to intercept the clearing. I expected, at best, only partially clear skies, but as the auroras brightened up, the clouds disappeared completely (only to return before sunrise).
I drove up to Caribou Lake and walked out a few meters from the boat landing to frame my shots. Overall, the display was not spectacular as the lights remained fairly close to the horizon, but they brightened up nicely for a few minutes.
The oval begins to brighten at 1:49 AM. |
Some structure emerges at 1:59 AM. |
