May 12, 2018 Auroras
Grand Rapids, MN
Here are some auroras for the State of Minnesota fishing opener 2018. They were caused by a solar wind high speed stream with Bz hanging out around -3 to -5 nT for about twelve hours previous to this outing. I was out from 10:00 PM CDT until midnight.
As soon as it got dark enough to see them, the auroras were visible on the northern horizon. This shot was taken at 10:35 PM. |
The auroras brighten up in a substorm that started around 11:00 PM CDT. |
A bit more color comes into the mix. |
Some brighter columns ten minutes after the initial substorm. |
Here, the columns fill the sky but at a lesser intensity. |
My final decent shot at 11:22 PM. |
