August 12, 2017 Auroras
Grand Rapids, MN
A corotating interaction region and onset of a high speed stream of solar wind briefly brought auroras to Grand Rapids in the evening of the 11th (12th UTC day). I went out to photograph them, wondering if it would be an active night, but Bz return to its mostly northward orientation as the high speed stream moved in, bringing the prospects of a bright auroral display to an end. I was back home around 11:00 PM.

The closer arc of auroras faded while a mild substorm ocurred on the far northern horizon. |
