March 16, 2017 Auroras
Wabana Lake
Unsettled solar wind conditions provided an opportunity to see auroras. March is the best time of year to get out on the lake ice and explore areas to photograph auroras. Given the fact that Bz wasn't very far south, I was expecting the auroras to be limited to the northern horizon. That meant I needed to find a lake with a pretty decent northern view. Since I hadn't photographed on Wabana in a while, and because it's view is accessible only when the lake is frozen, I chose Wabana.
Soon after I started photographing, I noticed the zodiacal light and remembered this is the best time of year to see it. I immediately grabbed my wide angle lens and took a few shots pointing west. For the rest of the time, I watched as the lights faded on the northern horizon.
