February 18, 2016 Auroras
Grand Rapids, MN
A high speed stream of solar wind, up to 700 km/s, blew past Earth in the early evening, creating some auroras. Characteristic of 2016, there was nothing really spectacular. The clouds moved in at sunset as is typical (just the timing of weather systems, it seems), but suprisingly, they cleared twice in the evening. The first time that happened, I went over to Prairie Lake and snapped a couple pictures, but the aurora oval did not really even show up on the pictures well enough to post here. The second clearing was just after 11:00 PM, and I went down the street and saw the oval from there. I went over to McKinney Lake to get past the Blandin wood lot lights.
