September 7, 2015 Auroras
Chippewa National Forest
Yes. You guessed it. I high speed stream of solar wind (we rarely get solar flares any more) swept past Earth, bringing auroras to northern Minnesota. I awakened in the middle of the night and could not sleep any further, so I decided to hunt auroras.
Proton arc and Milky Way, looking west. The western edge of the main auroral oval can be seen as the green glow on the right. |
Auroral structure appears on the northern horizon. |
The moon rises while the auroras dance. |
A brighter auroral oval later in the night. 3:17 AM on Labor Day. |
