August 13, 2015 Auroras
Blackduck, Minnesota
The auroras are generally pretty active in August, and August 2015 is no exception. I started out doing some storm chasing and ended up combining it with aurora chasing. Oh, yes, and tonight was the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. There were plenty of meteors lighting up the sky, too. The only thing missing was the moon.
A lucky strike at Tenstrike! I first spotted the auroras here. |
An aurora substorm starts as the auroras brighten. |
The auroras dim a bit before a fireball moves across the sky, accompanied by a bright flash of lightning. |
The auroras reignite while another meteor enters the atmosphere. |
Three meteors in this shot. It's an 8-second exposure. |
While I'm heading back home on Highway 46, the auroras dim to just a slight green glow. |
