February 18, 2015 Auroras
Chippewa National Forest (Pughole and Orange Lakes)
Another high speed stream from a coronal hole began to affect Earth's magnetosphere on the evening of February 17 with a more southward-pointing magnetic field. A strong cold front had come through earlier, and there were a few arctic snow showers behind it, but as the air gets colder, the show showers become lighter and more transparent, allowing the auroras to shine through them. I started out at Pughole Lake because of a better view of the northern horizon, but once the auroras got a little higher in the sky, I drove over to Orange Lake, where there is a bit more scenery to use as foregrounds.
A band of glaciated, shallow convective clouds and show showers hides most of the auroral arc. |
After some time, the clouds and snow showers moved off, and the auroras began to expand southward. |
I decided to move to Orange Lake, where I could do a bit more composition. |
A bit of a substorm with taller auroras. |
Fading a little bit now (partially blocked by snow showers), but still tall. |
I moved back with the other camera and shot a different foreground. Camera #1 is in the distance. |
Looks like I must have adjusted Camera #1 a bit to the left. |
