November 20, 2014 Aurora

Itasca County (Moose Lake)

Bz tipped a bit south, so I decided to check for auroras.  I headed to Pokegama Lake, and the skies were mostly clear, but there was a lot of haze, and I was looking directly north toward Grand Rapids, so I decided to head north of town.  In the intervening time, scattered clouds either developed or moved back in.  I drove to Moose Lake, which was already frozen, and pulled over at a parking spot to walk out on the ice and check for auroras.  The clouds made it difficult to tell whether I was looking at a glow behind them or at lights underneath them illuminating the base of the clouds.  It turned out I was looking at a bit of glow, so I'm posting the best shot here.

Moose Lake Lights
Lights over Moose Lake.  The picture is rather complicated.  The orange areas are man-made lights illuminating the underside of the clouds. However, there is an area of greener color to the lower right, above the brightest light on the horizon.  That greenish light is the auroral glow from behind the clouds.  Orange is dominant, but the auroras are poking through.
