November 10, 2014 Auroras
Tettegouche State Park, Silver Bay, Minnesota.
I was driving home from a Great Lakes Aurora Hunters gathering (followed by a moose photography trip up the Gunflint Trail) when I checked the solar wind conditions and noticed a southward Bz (as low as -10 nT). After looking for a few places along the North Shore with a nice north view, I settled on Shovel Point in Tettegouche State Park. From there, I could look directly northward over some water and over the ridge, where the auroral oval had just appeared. I photographed for an hour or so, during which time the moon rose, and a CME struck, sending Bz strongly north (+17 nT) and shutting down the auroras.

First appearance of the oval as I showed up at Shovel Point.. |

A step back to show more trees. |

The moon starts to rise, and auroras are still on the left. |

The moon starts to illuminate the cliffs over the lake. |

A wider angle (16mm) view of the cliffs as the moon continues to climb into the sky.. |
