October 23, 2014 Auroras and Solar Eclipse

, Itasca County, Minnesota

I went out to shoot the eclipse after work. I also wanted to get the setting, eclipsed sun at the horizon on Lake Winnie, but a bank of cirrostratus on the western horizon changed those plans. I got some colorful sunset pictures instead. Afterwards, I explored some other shooting locations on Lake Winnie, and some VERY dim auroras appeared.

The eclipse images were shot at 800 mm and then cropped. The sunset picture was shot at 800 mm without cropping. The beach images were shot at 16mm.

eclipse
The solar eclipse at the fullest extent that I was able to capture.
symmetric eclipse
A more symmetric image emerged a few minutes later.
Colorful Sunset
A colorful sunset at The Birches boat landing on Lake Winnibigoshish. This I shot at 800mm full frame.
twilight
Twilight at the Tamarack Point boat landing.
weak auroras
Very weak auroras appear on the horizon. There is airglow above that and a band of clouds in between.
