July 26, 2014 Auroras
Grand Rapids, MN
Bz dropped south to as low as -7 nT, and the solar wind picked up speed to nearly 400 km/s, causing the auroras to appear over northern Minnesota. It was nice timing with a new moon. I had gone to bed under skies a little too cloudy for this type of display, but I awoke shortly before 3:00 AM and checked outside. Sure enough, the oval was visible from my front yard, right at treetop level. I hopped in my car and headed for a few spots around town where it was dark enough to shoot.

Front Yard shot at 3:00 AM. 70 mm, f2.8, 15 sec, ISO 1600. I changed white balance to tungsten (2850 K) in town to avoid the orange color of the street lighting. |
