March 3, 2014 Auroras
Bovey, MN
Although I had also used a snowmobile to get to my shooting location on January 1/2, this was the first time I had done it almost purely on snowmobile. I had not planned to shoot much as there were no geomagnetic storms forecast, but Bz had dropped to -5 nT earlier in the evening, so I decided to bring my camera and tripod with me in case I saw a glow. The primary reason to go out was to experience the snowmobile trails at least one time before the snow melted. The snowy and cold winter makes for great trail conditions, particularly because the snow sets up so firmly after the groomer goes by if it's really cold. That keeps the trails from getting rough because the snow stays packed in place rather than getting churned up as sleds go by.
