August 31, 2013 Auroras
Trout Lake, Bovey, MN
A weak high speed solar stream from a coronal hole sparked some auroras during the evening. The sky was a bit smoky from forest fires across North America, but there were no clouds, the temperature was warm, and the winds were light, making it a great evening to view auroras. The show started as soon as it got dark enough to see, and it continued on and off for a couple hours before Bz went north and mostly shut things off. I missed the height of the show around 9:30 (pillars reaching to the north star) because we were out fishing, and I didn't have my camera in the boat. When we returned from fishing, the show started up again, and I was able to get a few shots to document this event.
Bz never got really far south, so this event was about as good as it can get for Bz of -5 or so.
